Panther Passing Across


I wrote this song after reading “A Sorrow in Our Heart: The Life of Tecumseh” by Allan W. Eckert

Tecumseh, the great Shawnee leader, sat on the bench right next to William Henry Harrison, at that time not yet the 9th President of the United States. As Harrison was talking, Tecumseh kept on sliding closer to him. Until Harrison, getting dangerously close to the edge of the bench, exclaimed: “Sir, you are crowding me!” Tecumseh motioned away and replied with a smile: “Yes I was. And now you know how my people feels.”
